Cameron Diaz Says No as My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel Moves Forward

Cameron Diaz has confirmed she won’t return for Sony’s My Best Friend’s Wedding 2, while Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney remain attached to the long-awaited sequel.

Hollywood's nostalgia machine is running on overdrive—and this time it's circling back to 1997. Sony is officially developing My Best Friend's Wedding 2, a sequel to the rom-com that grossed nearly $300 million worldwide and left a cultural footprint as big as Julia Roberts' iconic laugh. Roberts is back. Dermot Mulroney is back. But Cameron Diaz? She's out, flatly, definitively, done.

A source close to the actress told National Enquirer that Diaz isn't picking up the phone: “Cameron is not doing it. She's done with Hollywood.” The bluntness says it all. Diaz retired in 2018, only poking her head back in for Jamie Foxx's Back in Action. The sequel train will leave without her.

That decision stings, because part of what made P.J. Hogan's original film so sharp was Diaz's brightness against Roberts' calculated chaos. Julia's Julianne was scheming and desperate; Diaz's Kimmy was sweet, naïve, and impossible not to root for. Without that balance, the question lingers—what's the emotional spine of a sequel? Gorgeous. Grating. Gorgeous again.

Sony has at least made one inspired choice: they've tapped Celine Song to write the screenplay. Song, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Past Lives, isn't exactly known for sugar-frosted rom-coms. She builds delicate heartbreak machines, stories about time, distance, and the stuff we don't say. If she brings even half of that to Wedding 2, the film could transcend the reunion gimmick. Or—it could collapse under the weight of its own legacy. Maybe that's the point. Or maybe not.

Mulroney first teased the sequel while promoting Netflix's The Hunting Wives earlier this year, saying “lawyers were talking.” That was the polite version of “contracts are being drafted.” Now, with Roberts confirmed and Song scripting, this isn't rumor territory—it's happening. Sony's also clearly watching the 1990s revival wave: Happy Gilmore 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, even Disney's upcoming Freakier Friday. Someone's betting that audiences want their comfort food reheated.

Meanwhile, Roberts is on a roll. After last year's sun-drenched Ticket to Paradise, she'll appear in Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt and the thriller Panic Carefully. She's not coasting. She's leaning into the second wind of her career. And maybe, just maybe, a return to one of her most loved films is a victory lap worth watching.

Anyway. Where does that leave us? Diaz won't be there—her silence speaks louder than any cameo. Everett's name hasn't surfaced yet, though fans will no doubt scream if his George isn't invited back. What's certain is this: My Best Friend's Wedding is no longer just a memory. Sony is gambling that lightning can strike twice, with or without the bridesmaid who once stole the scene.
