There's something almost charming about James Cameron's stubbornness. While every studio under the sun floods social feeds with 15-second teaser clips and TikTok-ready reveals, Cameron insists on doing things the way they used to — the way they should . A theatrical trailer premiere, exclusive to “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” followed by a delayed digital release. It's a throwback move, and not the kind that feels forced or nostalgic for nostalgia's sake. It's just Cameron, still convinced — or maybe just hoping — that people will go to the movies to see movies.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” has been in post since 2023, which in Cameron-world is practically a blink. The man who took over a decade between the original “Avatar” and “The Way of Water” is now on a six-year sprint to finish three more sequels — with plans, apparently, for two more beyond that. December 19, 2025, is the confirmed release date for “Fire and Ash.” That's just under two years from now, which, again, feels almost rushed by Cameron standards.
He's pushing WETA Digital to new heights — again. Motion capture tech that once made us gawk at Pandora's glow now promises even deeper immersion. And yes, the film will be “a little bit longer” than “The Way of Water,” which clocked in at 3 hours and 12 minutes. Because apparently, restraint is not in the man's vocabulary.

I remember walking out of “The Way of Water” not entirely sure what I'd just seen. It was beautiful, yes. Technically staggering. But emotionally? It was like watching someone build a cathedral only to leave it empty. Still, it made $2.3 billion. So who am I to argue with the box office?
Cameron's not done, though. He's confirmed “Avatar 3” for 2025, “Avatar 4” in 2029, and “Avatar 5” in 2031. At 76, he'll still be around for the fifth film — but he's already talking about passing the baton for 6 and 7. Whether that happens remains to be seen. The man has a history of changing his mind when the cameras roll.
As for the trailer — if it follows the same rollout as “The Way of Water,” we'll get a taste in theaters this month, and then the rest of us can catch it online a week or two later. It's a strange kind of patience, but maybe that's the point. Cameron doesn't want you watching “Fire and Ash” on your phone during lunch. He wants you to sit in the dark, surrounded by strangers, and feel the screen pull you in.
I don't know if that kind of magic still works. But I'll be damned if I don't want to find out.
