In “Am I OK?”, Johnson plays Lucy, a woman in her 30s who finds her sexuality as her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) suggests she commutes from Los Angeles to London for work. As Lucy navigates the queer dating pool without a lifetime of conviction, the film explores the power of female friendship and the courage it takes to embrace one's authentic self.
Johnson's performance was praised for its comedic charm and emotional depth, with IndieWire's Kate Erbland noting that “while Lucy's journey — bringing one's sexuality beyond her coming-of-age story which happens all the time, which is not something we usually see on screen, especially with such comedic trappings — is serious, Johnson keeps Lucy grounded, relatable, and incompetent to avoid it.”

The film also stars Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon and Sean Hayes, as well as executive producer Notaro. Screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz drew inspiration from her own experiences, the beginning comes to think of “Am I OK?” as a “friendship film” based on her best friend Jessica Elbaum, who serves as the producer.
With its heartfelt exploration of sexuality, friendship, and self-discovery, “Am I OK?” promises to be a standout in the coming-of-age genre. Fans of Dakota Johnson and stories that celebrate the complexities of life and love won't want to miss this charming and poignant film when it premieres on HBO on June 6th, 2024.
