The remake of
Pascal Laugier‘s violent French horror film
Martyrs is moving forward with
Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) hired to serve behind the lens.
The film tells the story of Lucie and Anna, two orphans who develop a strong bond with each other, until one of them seeks revenge on a family who may or may not have abused her as a child.
Stamm shares his thoughts on the remake:
Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don't have to shoot yourself when it's over.
Every time you think you know where it's going, it goes somewhere else. It plays on things that are familiar – like two friends who can't be separated, kind of a Forrest Gump and Jenny situation. But then it takes a turn, and in doing so asks interesting quesitons. ‘If you have a best friend in the world and she goes crazy, how much do you owe this friend to go down with them?' It's much more than a horror film.
The new movie will is produced by
Twilight producer
Wyck Godfrey, who previously stated that he wants
Kristen Stewart in the lead role but Stamm denied any rumor that she would star in the remake.
Stamm is also attached to another horror movie, Reincarnate, the second installment of the
Night Chronicles from M. Night Shyamalan. Reincarnate is reportedly going into production in 2011, which likely means that the remake of
Martyrs will follow.
No production date has been set.
