David Fincher, the director behind some of the most notable psychological horror dramas, is now going to try something new by directing an English adaptation of the world phenomenon ‘Squid Game .' As reported by The Playlist's Rodrigo Perez, Fincher will helm the show alongside Dennis Kelly, who created ‘Utopia.'
According to Fincher, his interest in “Squid Game” started as early as 2021 when the series became popular on Netflix. This made him shelve the making of the “Chinatown” prequel to focus on the remake of the South Korean phenomenon. Although Netflix has not released an official statement, according to Perez's report, this is most probably the next project that Fincher will undertake directing, however, there is still a chance that Fincher may direct ‘Strangers'.
In December of the previous year, Jeff Sneider divulged on the Hot Mic podcast that Fincher agreed to direct Netflix's “Squid Game” reboot. It may not be a combination that comes naturally but it could work out. Speaking of Fincher, his specialization in examining psychological violence perfectly complements the show which, like “Squid Game,” captivated viewers with its tense portrayal of people's struggle for survival.
Fincher's remakes attempt have had mixed success. The success of his version of ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' indicated his proficiency in remaking complicated stories. Though, he is still in the process of developing a new version of Alfred Hitchcock's ‘Strangers on a Train' which stars Ben Affleck and is funded by Netflix. It is still unknown whether Fincher will go for “Strangers” or “Squid Game”, but the probability of a remake is undeniable in this case.
While some fans may wish to see Fincher work on new shows such as another season of ‘Mindhunter', the idea of him taking on a ‘Squid Game' reimagining is definitely enticing. I always appreciated how Fincher likes to go really deep into psychology of the characters, which could bring a whole new level to “Squid Game. ”
All in all, it is possible to say that with David Fincher as a director and Dennis Kelly as the writer, the adaptation of ‘Squid Game' is set to introduce a new vision into the already popular series. Whether this remake will be as successful as the previous one, only time will tell, but with Fincher at the reigns this much be interesting to watch.
