DCU Justice League Heroes Ranked by Power From Hawkgirl to Superman

James Gunn's Superman introduced five heroes who'll form the foundation of the DCU's eventual Justice League—and their power levels reveal a carefully calibrated hierarchy that puts humanity alongside godhood.

DCU Justice League Heroes Ranked by Power

There’s a moment in Superman that stuck with me more than any of the Kaiju carnage or Metropolis destruction. Hawkgirl kills a man. Coldly. Deliberately. And then she tells him she’s not like Superman.

That line echoes. It tells you everything about how James Gunn is building his DCU Justice League—not as a collection of interchangeable powerhouses, but as a spectrum ranging from brutal pragmatism to restrained godhood. Five heroes. Five very different approaches to power. And a hierarchy that says as much about philosophy as it does about who’d win in a fight.

QUICK FACTS
  • Universe: James Gunn’s DCU
  • Source Film: Superman (2025)
  • Heroes Ranked: 5 (Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Superman)
  • Team Status: Justice Gang (not yet Justice League)
  • Upcoming: Lanterns, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Breaking Down the DCU Justice League Power Hierarchy

Gunn has explained that his DCU skips most origin stories—metahumans have existed on Earth for centuries. This isn’t a world discovering superheroes; it’s a world that’s learned to live alongside them. The Justice Gang, funded by Maxwell Lord and featuring Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific, operates as something between corporate super-team and independent crisis response unit.

But here’s what makes the power ranking interesting: Superman and Supergirl work with the Justice Gang but don’t report to Lord. As Gunn clarified on Threads, the Kryptonians team up with them “a lot,” forming their own unofficial league. That distinction matters. When you’re ranking DCU Justice League members by power, you’re also ranking who answers to whom—and why.

CAST & CREW
  • Superman: David Corenswet
  • Supergirl: Milly Alcock
  • Green Lantern: Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner)
  • Hawkgirl: Isabela Merced
  • Mr. Terrific: Edi Gathegi

5. Hawkgirl: The Warrior Who Doesn’t Need a Second Chance

Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl lands at the bottom of the power ranking, and I want to be careful here—”least powerful” in this lineup is like being the shortest NBA player. Still a giant.

Her Thanagarian physiology grants superhuman strength, speed, and durability. She flies at velocities that let her keep pace with actual combat scenarios. Her mace can knock out armed squads and even damage Kaiju-level threats. The reincarnation ability hints at a deeper mythology the DCU hasn’t explored yet.

Hawkgirl DCU

But that kill. That cold, deliberate execution of Vasil Ghurkos. It establishes her as the team member willing to cross lines others won’t. In power hierarchy terms, she’s the baseline—the one who reminds you these aren’t all demigods. Some of them are just incredibly dangerous humans with wings.

4. Mr. Terrific: The Brains Outperforming the Brawn

I’ll confess something: Mr. Terrific is the DCU Justice League member I’m most excited to see developed. Edi Gathegi plays him with the kind of swagger that makes “I don’t need your help. I’m goddamn Mr. Terrific” land as character-defining rather than cringe.

No superhuman physiology. No alien heritage. Just unmatched intellect and technology that the source material compares—correctly—to Tony Stark’s Iron Man. His T-Spheres function as offensive weapons, analytical tools, hacking devices, and explosive ordinance. The fight against Lex’s Raptors showed how unstoppable he becomes when facing conventional threats.

Mr Terrific DCU

Here’s where I argue with myself: is tech-based power really “less” than physical power, or is it just differently scalable? In Superman, Terrific single-handedly decoded the Pocket Universe threat. That’s a save no amount of punching could accomplish. Maybe the ranking systems we inherit from decades of “who’d win” debates don’t actually capture what matters.

3. Green Lantern: Imagination as Superpower

Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner brings the Power Ring—and the traditional understanding that Green Lanterns rank among DC’s most formidable figures. Flight, energy projection, constructs limited only by willpower and creativity.

The oven mitts construct during the Kaiju battle was pure Gardner: practical, slightly absurd, effective. Saving Mr. Terrific with a quick-thinking muzzle construct showed the improvisational combat instincts that make Lanterns so versatile.

Green Lantern DCU

Lanterns arrives next year with Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, which will presumably expand the Corps’ presence in the DCU. Gardner’s placement in the power ranking—third of five—suggests he’s operating below his potential, still finding his place in a universe where gods walk around.

2. Supergirl: The Potential Barely Glimpsed

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl appeared briefly in Superman, but her Kryptonian physiology places her firmly near the top of any DCU Justice League power ranking. Yellow sun energy grants her the same extraordinary strength, speed, flight, and near invulnerability as her cousin.

Supergirl DCU

Her screen time was limited—mostly showcasing durability by shrugging off powerful impacts from Krypto without flinching. But the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (title adjusted from the original “Woman of Tomorrow” designation) promises a deeper exploration of her capabilities.

If Gunn follows comic book precedent, Kara may actually rival Clark in raw power. The emotional complexity comes from how she uses it. That’s the real ranking system the DCU seems interested in.

1. Superman: Restrained Godhood as Philosophy

David Corenswet’s Superman sits atop the DCU Justice League power hierarchy, but with an asterisk Gunn has deliberately written into the character.

Kryptonian physiology under yellow sun grants immense strength, speed, and near invulnerability. He battles Kaiju. Survives outer space. The film suggests he can endure black holes. When Kryptonite isn’t around, no other hero approaches his combination of power, precision, and empathy.

Superman DCU

But—and this is crucial—Gunn’s Superman is “slightly toned down compared to previous iterations.” The film emphasizes restraint and humanity over godlike omnipotence. The power ranking puts him first, but the storytelling suggests that empathy is his actual greatest superpower. Gunn isn’t interested in Superman as ultimate weapon; he’s interested in Superman as ultimate example.

That’s the difference between this DCU Justice League and previous versions. Power serves character, not spectacle.

I keep returning to Hawkgirl’s line. She’s not like Superman. None of them are, really—and that’s the point.

The DCU Justice League power ranking matters less than what these five represent together: a spectrum from human ingenuity to alien godhood, from lethal pragmatism to hopeful restraint. With Batman and Wonder Woman reportedly priorities for DC Studios, the eventual team will shift these dynamics further. But the foundation Gunn established in Superman suggests he understands something fundamental about superhero teams: the interesting part isn’t who’s strongest. It’s how the strong choose to use what they have.

Tell me the ranking’s wrong. I change my mind on the Gardner-Terrific placement weekly.

What the DCU Justice League Power Ranking Reveals

  • Power isn’t the same as importance. Hawkgirl ranks lowest in raw ability but delivered the film’s most character-defining moment—suggesting narrative weight won’t follow power tiers.
  • Tech-based heroes compete with gods. Mr. Terrific’s placement proves Gunn values intelligence and adaptability as legitimate superpowers, not just physical superiority.
  • Green Lantern Corps expansion is coming. Gardner’s current ranking likely underrepresents what Lanterns can do once Lanterns introduces the full Corps mythology.
  • Superman’s restraint is deliberate worldbuilding. Toning down his power compared to previous versions allows other heroes room to matter in team scenarios.
  • Supergirl remains the wild card. Minimal screen time but maximum potential—her solo film could reshape this entire hierarchy.

FAQ

Why does the DCU Justice League power ranking put Hawkgirl at the bottom despite her brutal effectiveness?

Hawkgirl’s ranking reflects raw power metrics—strength, durability, speed—where she falls below characters with cosmic abilities or Kryptonian physiology. But Gunn’s DCU clearly values her differently. Her willingness to kill, her cold pragmatism, her warrior ethos make her arguably the most dangerous team member even if not the most powerful. The ranking systems inherited from comics don’t always capture what makes characters essential to team dynamics. She’s the one who does what Superman won’t.

How does Mr. Terrific compare to Iron Man in the DCU Justice League power structure?

The comparison is intentional and accurate: both are tech-genius heroes compensating for lack of innate superpowers through intellect and gadgetry. But Terrific’s T-Spheres offer different versatility than Iron Man’s armor—they’re external tools rather than wearable enhancement, allowing for tactical deployments that suit doesn’t permit. In the DCU Justice League power ranking, this places him below beings with inherent abilities but above anyone relying on conventional weapons or training. His ceiling depends entirely on what he builds next.

Why is James Gunn’s DCU Superman less powerful than previous versions?

Gunn deliberately toned down Superman’s godlike omnipotence to serve grounded storytelling. Previous iterations (Snyder’s especially) treated Superman as essentially limitless, which creates narrative problems: why does anyone else matter if one character can solve everything? By establishing restraint and humanity as defining traits, Gunn makes Superman’s power meaningful rather than guaranteed. The DCU Justice League power ranking puts him first, but the storytelling ensures other heroes have room to contribute meaningfully to crises.

Will the DCU Justice League power ranking change when Batman and Wonder Woman join?

Almost certainly. Wonder Woman traditionally rivals Superman in power—divine heritage grants strength, speed, and combat skills that put her near the top of any DC hierarchy. Batman introduces the opposite complication: a human who nevertheless leads teams featuring literal gods. His inclusion would likely split the ranking between “power” and “leadership,” since Bat-family tactical abilities don’t map onto the same scale as Kryptonian physiology.
