Guernica

Celebrated film director Carlos Saura and a Spanish film producer Elías Querejeta who has worked with Saura in seven films would be teaming up once again. The duo will join forces for a project entitled 33 Dias, about Pablo Picasso’s emotional turmoil because he painted his masterpiece ‘Guernica’. It also coincided with a crisis in Picasso’s relationship with his lover, the fiery and cerebral surrealist photographer Dora Maar. The film will show how painting Guernica, capital of the Basque area, and a symbol of resistance bombed by Hitler’s air force at the height of the Spanish Civil War was near salvation for Picasso in a moment of private crisis. Saura and Querejeta penned the script alongside French author Louis-Charles Sirjacq. Triple Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro is also in advanced negotiations to join the project combining Saura’s prior fiction photos from Goya in Bordeaux, Tango and Io, Don Giovanni in a few of the new project’s narrative, drama and key images. Querejeta produced numerous of Saura’s modern classics, such as The Search, Raise Ravens and Deprisa, deprisa. Co-producer Alberto Rojo said that they were speaking for a worldwide cast that may include French thesp Jose Garcia as Picasso. Production on 33 Dias starts next summer in Paris and Guernica, where producers will reproduce Picasso’s Paris studio. Check out the trailer for Saura’s Oscar-nominated film Tango (1998), which combines fiction with documentary through sizzling mash of sensuality and passion with choreographed elements of Argentina’s turbulent history.
