Cinema enthusiasts, prepare yourselves for a cinematic revival that promises to captivate and disturb in equal measure. Luis Buñuel's 1953 classic, ‘Él', a profound exploration of jealousy and obsession, has been meticulously restored in 4K and is set to grace select theaters this spring. This restoration offers both longtime fans and new audiences an opportunity to experience Buñuel's unsettling narrative in unparalleled visual clarity.

Background and Restoration Details:

‘Él' delves into the life of Francisco Galván de Montemayor, portrayed by Arturo de Córdova, a devout bachelor whose infatuation with the young and beautiful Gloria, played by Delia Garcés, spirals into a harrowing journey of paranoia and possessiveness. The film stands as a testament to Buñuel's incisive commentary on the darker facets of human nature and societal norms.

This 4K restoration has been meticulously crafted from a dupe positive preserved by Películas y Vídeos Internacionales at the Filmoteca de la UNAM. The color grading process was supervised by Gabriel Figueroa Flores, ensuring that the film's visual aesthetics remain true to its original presentation. The restoration work reached completion at L'Immagine Ritrovata in 2022, with special acknowledgments to The Film Foundation, Guillermo del Toro, and Daniela Michel for their invaluable contributions.

Re-Release and Viewing Opportunities:

Janus Films has unveiled a new trailer and poster for ‘Él', heralding its return to the big screen. The film is scheduled to open at New York's Film Forum on March 14, 2025, with plans for a broader release in select theaters across the United States.

Critical Reception and Legacy:

Upon its initial release, ‘Él' was met with mixed reactions but has since been re-evaluated and lauded for its daring portrayal of psychological disintegration. The film's influence is evident in subsequent cinematic works that explore similar themes of obsession and mental unraveling. This restoration not only preserves a significant piece of film history but also reintroduces a narrative that continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.

The 4K restoration of Luis Buñuel's ‘Él' is a cinematic event that should not be missed. It offers a rare opportunity to witness a master filmmaker's exploration of the human psyche in pristine visual quality. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing it for the first time, ‘Él' promises to leave an indelible mark on your cinematic consciousness.
