First Reactions from Secret Premiere Screening of THE MASTER

Nick Martin February 7, 2013 Add a Comment
The_Master_Joaquin_Phoenix The night before last, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master screened at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, CA, unannounced, as part of the American Cinematheque screening of a new DCP restoration of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. There Will Be Blood's follow-up was projected in director's preferred format of 70mm, which was reportedly causing some problems for distributors, but that is how the flick was shot. As you probably know The Master is influenced by L. Ron Hubbard's creation of Scientology, but one thing you may not know about pic is that it apparently runs about 2 hours and 10 minutes long. A mystery 70mm movie reportedly contains ‘three or four scenes between (Joaquin) Phoenix and (Philip Seymour) Hoffman that are barn burners and the best work Amy Adams has ever done.' The film style has been described as ‘Terrence Malick by way of There Will Be Blood' and that ‘the Master title refers to more of a dog and his master.' A 1950s-set drama that gained pretty positive reactions is targeting a limited September 14th 2012 release followed by a nationwide roll-out a week later. However, The Master will first premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1st, followed by a screening at the Toronto Film Festival. The Master is (more) proof. #themaster' @pillowfightin ‘@cigsandredvines Saw The Master in 70mm at the Aero Santa Monica. Surprise screening after The Shining. Its like nothing yvever seen before.' @jessecrall ‘The Master: B+ hazy, meandering story with beautiful staging and headed by Phoenix's brilliant, year's-best performance. @kristapley' @Super_Matts ‘THE MASTER is…interesting…I'll be thinking about it for days #THEMASTER70MM J Phoenix and P S Hoffman are out of this world' Sources: Hollywood Elsewhere, /Film
