KPop Demon Hunters Made Hideo Kojima Cry And Now We Need The Game

The legendary creator posted the most unhinged emotional reaction to the viral hit, and honestly, the gaming pitch writes itself.

kpop demon hunters kojima reaction

We need to talk about Hideo Kojima‘s Twitter account right now because I’ve been staring at it for twenty minutes and my brain is refusing to calibrate. The man who invented the tactical espionage genre, the visionary who scanned Norman Reedus into a post-apocalyptic walking simulator, just admitted he “cried his eyes out” watching KPop Demon Hunters.

He didn’t just like it. He used the “🥺🫶” emojis.

Think about that. The creator of Metal Gear Solid used the pleading face emoji about an animated movie where K-pop stars fight demons with magical weapons. I don’t know if I should feel validated or terrified. Probably both.

The Film That Broke The Legend

If you haven’t been online in 2025, first of all, congrats on your mental health. Second, you missed KPop Demon Hunters taking over literally everything. The premise is the kind of “so dumb it’s genius” energy I live for: Rumi, Mira, and Zoey (voiced by Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo) are stadium-filling idols who hunt supernatural threats backstage. Their enemies? A rival boy band who are literal demons.

It’s Sailor Moon meets Devil May Cry with a Coachella budget.

But here’s the thing—Kojima didn’t just watch it. He got wrecked by it. He posted that he “casually started watching” and ended up sobbing. And then—because the simulation is glitching—he dropped a take on the viral track “Golden” that reads like a threat: “Love it, hate it, will projectile-vomit if you hear it one more time… you can’t deny ‘Golden,’ the most gigantic pop song in memory.”

“Projectile-vomit.”

I mean, he’s right. The song (produced by actual K-pop titans like KUSH and Vince) is catchy in that way where you love it for three days and then want to peel your own skin off on day four. Kojima gets it.

Why The “Kojima x Netflix” Game Needs To Happen

The timeline immediately pivoted to one demand: Let Kojima make the video game.

And my first thought was “No, leave him alone, let him make OD.” But then I looked at the character designs again—the neon aesthetic, the blend of high-fashion and tactical gear—and I realized this is actually perfect.

It’s literally his entire vibe. Dual identities? Check. Over-the-top melodrama mixed with cool tech? Check. The potential for a 40-minute cutscene explaining the philosophical implications of fandom while characters fight in the rain? It’s all there.

Imagine a game where you have to nail a rhythm-game dance routine to charge up your ultimate ability, then switch to hack-and-slash combat to decapitate a demon boy band member, all while a Lea Salonga track plays in the background. I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for that.

The Netflix Problem

The only thing stopping this from being the greatest game of the decade is… well, Netflix.

If they make this game in-house, it’s going to be a mobile match-three puzzler you play inside the Netflix app while waiting for Stranger Things season 5. Gross.

But if they have any sense—which is a big “if”—they saw that tweet and immediately called Kojima Productions. Hand him the IP. Give him a blank check. Let him make it weird. Let him make us cry our eyes out too.

The Stuff That’s Actually Worth Talking About

Kojima’s Emoji Usage
The “🥺🫶” combo from a 60-year-old auteur is the single most important film criticism of the year.

The “Golden” Paradox
He perfectly captured the vibe of a viral hit: admitting it’s a “gigantic pop song” while acknowledging it makes you want to projectile vomit.

The Cast is Stacked
We glossed over it, but having Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and huge K-pop producers involved is why this thing hits different. It’s not a parody; it’s a flex.

The Boy Band Twist
Making the villains a rival boy band is the kind of meta-commentary on the industry that Kojima would absolutely feast on narratively.

FAQ: KPop Demon Hunters & Kojima

Why is everyone freaking out about Hideo Kojima’s reaction?

Because it’s Hideo Kojima. The man is known for complex, often dark, cinematic storytelling. Seeing him admit that a colorful, animated movie about K-pop demon hunters made him “cry his eyes out” validates the film in a way no traditional review could. Plus, the emoji usage broke people’s brains.

Will there actually be a KPop Demon Hunters game?

Right now, it’s just fan demand. But with the film dominating Netflix charts and Kojima’s public endorsement, the pressure is on. Netflix has been trying to break into gaming for years—licensing this IP to a studio that knows what they’re doing (instead of making a cheap mobile tie-in) would be their smartest move.

What did Kojima say about the song “Golden”?

He called it the “most gigantic pop song in memory” but also joked about “projectile-vomiting” if he hears it again. It’s the perfect description of a viral earworm—undeniably good production that gets played until you psychologically snap.

Is KPop Demon Hunters connected to any existing anime?

No, it’s an original production, though it heavily borrows tropes from magical girl anime and supernatural action series. That’s partly why a Kojima adaptation would work so well—it already feels like a video game world waiting to be playable.

—anyway I’m gonna go listen to “Golden” one more time and if I don’t tweet for three hours it’s because I’m dissociating in a corner.
