Man of Tomorrow Wonder Woman Rumor: Gunn’s DCU Plan?

Fans see a Trinity team-up in the making. I see a studio showing its hand—and its desperation—far too early.

Wonder Woman

Another week, another seismic tremor from the rumor mill—this time with the epicenter located squarely in James Gunn‘s nascent DCU. The whisper, courtesy of scooper Daniel Richtman, is that Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow is looking to cast a “major female role” with an actress in her 20s. And just like that, the internet did what it does best: it jumped to the one conclusion that sends algorithms into a frenzy.

It has to be Wonder Woman.

Let’s be clear. In the grand, chaotic tapestry of franchise building, this kind of strategic leak is less a piece of news and more a trial balloon. The studio floats an idea, gauges the temperature of the room, and watches the free marketing roll in. And on paper, the logic is almost painfully obvious. Gunn and his co-chief Peter Safran aren’t just making a movie; they’re trying to build a universe that doesn’t collapse on itself for the third time. Seeding your next tentpole star in your first one is straight from the Kevin Feige playbook, Chapter One.

We’ve already seen Gunn employ this tactic. Isabela Merced‘s Hawkgirl is in the mix, and the source material itself notes he gave Supergirl a cameo to set up her own film. Gunn has a habit of putting his personal stamp on these characters before handing them off, like a chef tasting the sauce before it leaves the kitchen. Introducing Diana Prince in Man of Tomorrow would be a classic Gunn move—a way to establish his version of the Amazon before another creative team takes the reins for her own solo outing, which scribe Ana Nogueira is supposedly fast-tracking.

The supposed narrative hook is almost too perfect. With Brainiac rumored as the big bad, obsessed with bottling civilizations, what’s a more prized jewel on Earth than Themyscira? Paradise Island becomes a target, bringing an agitated, protective Amazon princess into Superman’s orbit. It writes itself. A little too easily, perhaps.

But this is where the seasoned skepticism kicks in. “Major female role” is a wonderfully vague studio term. Yet the conviction behind the Wonder Woman theory is fueled by Gunn’s own words. He recently admitted that after getting the first few projects running, “we really need Wonder Woman and we really need Batman, because they’re so important to us.” He spoke of finding a writer who won’t take two years—a clear signal that the Amazon is on the fast track.

Dropping her into Man of Tomorrow isn’t just an introduction; it’s an acceleration. It’s a studio acknowledging it doesn’t have the luxury of time. They need their trinity, and they need it now. The weight on the shoulders of whatever 20-something actress lands this role—if the rumor even holds—is immense. She won’t just be playing a character; she’ll be carrying the hopes of a universe that’s been on life support for a decade.

For now, this remains well-sourced speculation. We’ll have to wait for the official casting sheet to see if we’re getting an Amazon or just another Metropolis civilian. But the conversation itself tells the whole story. The DCU is playing for keeps, and it’s using the oldest trick in the book: promising us tomorrow’s hero, today.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Decoding the ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Casting Buzz

  • The Core Rumor: A casting call is reportedly out for a “major female role” in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, specifically seeking an actress in her 20s.
  • The Fan Theory: The immediate and overwhelming speculation is that this role is for a new incarnation of Wonder Woman, setting up her future in the DCU.
  • Gunn’s Franchise Playbook: Introducing major characters in another hero’s film is a proven strategy, one Gunn has a history of using to establish his vision for the universe.
  • A Plausible Story Hook: With Brainiac as the villain, his motive of collecting civilizations provides a natural entry point for Wonder Woman to defend her home, Paradise Island.
  • The Official Word: While Gunn has confirmed Wonder Woman is a high priority for the DCU, her appearance in Man of Tomorrow remains entirely unconfirmed.
  • A Calculated Leak?: This kind of rumor serves as a perfect marketing tool, generating massive fan engagement and gauging public reaction to a potential casting direction.

FAQ

Is This Wonder Woman Casting Rumor Credible?

It’s credible as a rumor, but not as a fact. The logic behind it—Gunn’s strategy, the need for the Trinity, a plausible plot device—is sound. But until an official announcement, it’s just well-informed speculation designed to build hype.

Why Introduce Wonder Woman in a ‘Superman’ Film?

Efficiency. The new DCU can’t afford a slow, multi-year rollout like the MCU had in its early days. Placing a new Wonder Woman in their foundational film establishes her immediately and creates narrative momentum for the Justice League and her own solo project. It’s an aggressive, almost desperate, move.

What Does This Say About James Gunn’s DCU Strategy?

It shows he’s a pragmatist. He’s balancing creative storytelling with the brutal commercial realities of building a shared universe from the ground up. He’s borrowing a successful formula—the crossover seed—and hoping it bears fruit faster this time around.
