Martin Scorsese, the acclaimed movie director, is no stranger to experimental movies that push people into seriously contemplating. This talented director, who has already won the hearts of viewers with his outstanding films, the deep analysis of human relationships, and the creation of multi-layered and profound dramas, has returned once again as the executive producer for the film “The Freshly Cut Grass,” directed by Celina Murga.
Marked to premiere at one of the world's most recognized festivals – the Tribeca Fest on June 8, “The Freshly Cut Grass” is a drama that explores the realities of relations between men and women treated as the embodiment of moral principles while being involved in extramarital affairs themselves. The movie is written by Murga, Juan Villegas, Lucía Osorio and it breaks the rules of chauvinist culture and shows actual feminism, sexism and how they twist personal and working life.
Embedded in the main plot of the film is what many people experience in workplaces today and what sets them apart merely because of their gender regardless of the job they do. This topic has been a perfect match for Murga's inspiration as she is concerned with pushing the audiences into making them think and question the existing reality rather than providing some easy solutions which can be seen from her statement, “I like it when films make us question ourselves instead of giving us simple answers.
Continuing with the cast, we make note of talented Marina de Tavira, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in the film “Roma, “ and Joaquin Furriel, the star of “The Boss, Anatomy of a Crime ‘ and ‘El Camino de los Ingleses'. Also, Alfonso Tort, Romina Peluffo, Emanuel Parga, and Verónica Gerez.
Producer Axel Kuschevatzky of Infinity Hill (“Argentina, 1985”) praises Murga's filmmaking prowess, stating, “It's a movie about relationships, but it is actually structured as a thriller. Like in a Fritz Lang film, characters cannot fight destiny; they have to face their unavoidability. Celina Murga is clearly one of the top female filmmakers from Latin America, and this movie finds her at the top of her wonderful game, delving into the intricacies of marriage.”
“The Freshly Cut Grass” is a transatlantic production, bringing together talents from Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Europe, and the United States, showcasing the collaborative nature of contemporary cinema. Scorsese's involvement stems from his admiration for Murga's previous work, “The Third Side of the River” (2014), which he also executive produced after encountering her through Rolex's arts mentorship program.
As the film gears up for its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, anticipation builds for a captivating exploration of gender dynamics and societal expectations through the lens of human relationships. With Scorsese's backing and a talented ensemble cast, “The Freshly Cut Grass” promises to be a thought-provoking and unforgettable cinematic experience.
