Director Paul King has shared exciting news about the status of “Wonka 2,” the anticipated sequel to last year's hit film, “Wonka.” Known for directing the beloved “Paddington” films, King revealed that the “Wonka 2” script is halfway completed, with the story mapped out and an initial release target in mind.

During a recent interview, King said, “We've got about half of a draft. We've got a story that we like and we know where we want to take him.” The tentative release date for “Wonka 2” is currently set for December 17, 2027, in a holiday slot often reserved for big family-friendly releases.

With Timothée Chalamet expected to reprise his role as Willy Wonka, scheduling will be key. Chalamet is also set to film “Dune: Messiah” in early 2026, which means “Wonka 2” production will likely begin later that year. The original “Wonka” was a massive success, earning $632 million globally, which likely motivated Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel so quickly.

The film's release date suggests Warner Bros. hopes “Wonka 2” will capture the holiday movie crowd. Details of the plot are under wraps, but with King and Chalamet both committed to continuing the story, fans can expect more of the musical charm and adventurous spirit that made “Wonka” a hit.

With a script in the works and a strong creative team behind it, “Wonka 2” could become one of Warner Bros.' next major family franchises. As more information unfolds, fans of the original film and the timeless story will eagerly await news on its plot, cast, and a confirmed release timeline.

The anticipation for “Wonka 2” is already building, thanks to the first film's nostalgic charm and Timothée Chalamet's captivating performance as the young candymaker. Having Paul King at the helm again is a promising sign that the sequel will retain the whimsical tone and rich storytelling that made “Wonka” so enjoyable. However, given Chalamet's packed schedule, it's possible that filming and production may face delays. If Warner Bros. can manage these complexities and deliver by the holiday 2027 target, “Wonka 2” could very well become a seasonal favorite. The decision to release the film in December also shows strategic confidence that it will attract a large, family-focused audience.

“What are you most excited to see in ‘Wonka 2' – more musical numbers, Chalamet's unique portrayal, or new adventures in the chocolate factory?”
