Spanish actress Paz Campos Trigo, better known as Paz Vega
has been tapped to play tempestuous opera singer Maria Callas alongside Nicole Kidman
in Olivier Dahan
‘s Grace of Monaco
Kidman stars as Grace Kelly, the Hollywood actress who became Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco.
The film reportedly focuses on a six-month period in 1962 when Monaco was in a dispute with France and Princess Grace worked behind the scenes to prevent a coup. At the time, Grace came to know Callas, who was carrying on an affair with Greek millionaire Aristotle Onassis. While Onassis served as an advisor to Prince Rainier, Callas befriended Kelly and became one of her closest confidantes.
French film director and screenwriter, Dahan, which La Vie En Rose was the first French feature film ever to win two Academy Awards, will be directing a script written by Arash Amel who has been hired earlier in the year to write a screenplay for I Am Legend 2 for Warner Bros.
Vega, who broke out Stateside playing the title role in 2001s Sex and Lucia, just reteamed with her Talk to Her director Pedro Almodovar on his upcoming film, I’m So Excited.
The movie should not be confused with another Maria Callas biopic called Greek Fire in the works for years now with Eva Green attached.
Grace of Monaco comes to theaters sometimes in 2014.
