Here's the first (official) image from
Stephen Frears‘ upcoming
Philomena. Described as a
bitter-sweet comedy, the movie stars
Judi Dench as an Irishwoman who searches for the son she was forced to give up for adoption, while
Steve Coogan plays a journalist who helps her find her son. Head inside to take a better look!
Frears directs the movie from a script written by Coogan and
Jeff Pope, but in case you forgot – the movie is actually based on
Martin Sixsmith‘s book
The Lost Child of Philomena Lee.
Yeah, we're dealing with a true story in here. Dench is Philomena Lee, a “fallen” woman who fell pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952 and was sent to the convent of Roscrea.
And now, the spooky part of the story! Lee cared for her baby for three years until the Church took him from her and
sold him to America for adoption!
Coerced into signing a document promising never to attempt to see her child again, she nonetheless spent the next fifty years secretly searching for him, unaware that he was searching for her from across the Atlantic.
Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a world-weary political journalist who happened to be intrigued by her story. Together they set off for America on a journey that would not only reveal the extraordinary story of Philomena's son, but also create an unexpectedly close bond between them.
Unfortunately, still no US release date for
Philomena (the movie is set to hit UK theaters on November 1st, 2013).
But, you have nothing to worry about – we're definitely interested in this drama, so we'll keep an eye on it.
