Rebecca Ferguson Says No to Greatest Showman Sequel: ‘Sometimes Things Should Just Be Left’

In a recent interview, Rebecca Ferguson, the talented actress who played Jenny Lind in the 2017 musical film Greatest Showman, expressed her reluctance to revisit the character in a potential sequel.

When asked about the possibility of a follow-up film, Ferguson firmly stated, “No! Stop that. Come on!” Her reasons for declining a sequel are rooted in her desire to leave the character and the story intact, rather than risking a less-than-stellar sequel.

Released in 2017, Greatest Showman tells the story of PT Barnum's (Hugh Jackman) rise from poverty to fame as he brings together a group of diverse performers to create a groundbreaking circus. Ferguson's character, Jenny Lind, is a renowned opera singer who becomes a pivotal part of Barnum's show, eventually challenging his professional and personal life. The film's huge success and hopes from fans for a sequel in the future have led to speculation about a potential follow-up film.

However, Ferguson's recent comments suggest that she is not on board with the idea of a sequel. When asked about the possibility of a follow-up film, Ferguson told Collider, “Sometimes things should just be left — also because I'd be jealous. I feel like my character was kind of cast aside. I'll come back as a juggler.” Her comments are a testament to her commitment to leaving the character and the story intact, rather than risking a less-than-stellar sequel.

Personal Impressions: I understand Ferguson's reluctance to revisit the character of Jenny Lind in a potential sequel. The film's success is largely due to its unique blend of music, dance, and storytelling, and revisiting the character without a compelling reason could dilute the impact of the original film. Additionally, Ferguson's comments suggest that she is concerned about being typecast as Jenny Lind, which is a valid concern for any actor.

Do you think Rebecca Ferguson's decision to decline a sequel is a wise one? Why or why not?
