‘Sisu 2’ Wraps Filming: Finnish Action Sequel Set for 2025 Release

The gritty Finnish action film 'Sisu' returns in 2025 with Jalmari Helander and Jorma Tommila back for another explosive sequel, filmed in Estonia with a bigger budget.

The buzz around Finnish action cinema is reignited as “Sisu 2” wraps up production, promising a 2025 release for the highly anticipated sequel to the 2023 cult hit. Jalmari Helander, the director behind this unique World War II-era thriller, is back to guide the story of Aatami, a near-indestructible ex-soldier, once again portrayed by Jorma Tommila. Notably, this new chapter of “Sisu” relocates production from Finland to Estonia, raising intrigue over how the change in setting might impact the film's atmosphere.

The original “Sisu” carved out its place as a fast-paced, darkly humorous revenge story set during the final days of WWII. The film introduced us to Aatami, a gold-seeking soldier with an unbreakable spirit, as he's ruthlessly pursued by a Nazi battalion. The original budget of $6 million went a long way in creating inventive, stylized kills and intense confrontations that made Aatami's journey memorable. The sequel's reported budget increase—more than double the original—hints at even more ambitious action sequences and visual storytelling.

While “Sisu 2” holds onto its core creative team, plot details remain closely guarded. Helander's direction and Tommila's silent, stoic performance were central to the first film's success. Fans of the genre are hopeful for more of Aatami's unrelenting drive, alongside a fresh cast of antagonists and new creative kill sequences.

Filming this time in Estonia suggests a shift, potentially introducing varied landscapes or historical nuances. “Sisu 2” is clearly set to push boundaries, combining its unique blend of wartime chaos, bleak humor, and relentless action that set it apart from typical war movies. Viewers can expect another wild cinematic experience, with Aatami once again taking on insurmountable odds.

With its release scheduled for 2025, “Sisu 2” holds high expectations and the potential to expand the Finnish action genre. For fans of the original, and for those new to Aatami's rugged survivalist tale, the next installment promises a fresh but familiar journey through World War II mayhem, offering a rare mix of Finnish grit and Hollywood-style spectacle.

As a fan of inventive action films, “Sisu 2” is shaping up to be an exciting follow-up. The first film's relentless energy, absurdly dark humor, and gritty survivalist edge made it a refreshing take on the genre, capturing audiences worldwide. Jorma Tommila's portrayal of Aatami as a nearly indestructible soldier who single-handedly battles Nazis without uttering a word was both thrilling and amusing, a tribute to the old-school action hero with a twist. I'm especially interested in how the new Estonian setting will influence the film's style, and I'm hopeful the increased budget will allow for even more jaw-dropping moments.

Are you excited to see what ‘Sisu 2' has in store? What do you think relocating the production to Estonia will add to the film?

Let’s take Sisu to 10 sequels. Could watch this guy’s adventures on the way to the bank. He’s gotta make it before closing to make a deposit, y know?
