The film is set during the Bourbon Restoration in France, following the turbulent transition away from Napoleonic rule. Edmond Dantès (played by Pierre Niney), a young sailor, is falsely accused of treason by his jealous friend Fernand Mondego, who wants Dantès' girlfriend Mercedes for himself. Dantès is imprisoned on the island prison of Château d'If for 13 years, where he plots his revenge against those who betrayed him.With the help of a fellow prisoner, Dantès escapes the island and transforms himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. He uses his newfound riches to infiltrate Parisian high society and systematically enact his revenge on Fernand, Danglars, Mercedes, and Villefort – the four individuals responsible for his unjust imprisonment.

The release date for the French film adaptation of “The Count of Monte Cristo” is June 28, 2024.
