Uma Thurman Confirms Tarantino’s Next Spaghetti Western is Southern

Thurman, Tarantino

Uma Thurman doing press for her new film Ceremony (Max Winkler) and when asked about the prospect of a third Kill Bill installment, she presented the following news:

I think he has a script ready to start of a new film, A Southern, I think it’s really exciting. It’s another new story and a fresh piece of material that he is channeling at the moment. So I think ‘Kill Bill’ lives down the road.”

This is the first a bit official confirmation that it is definitely the slavery-epic movie QuentinTarantino has been working on. Since 2007 he told the British press he was in the early stage of the project,

I want to explore something that really hasn’t been done. I want to do movies that deal with America’s horrible past with slavery and stuff but do them like spaghetti westerns, not like big issue movies. I want to do them like they’re genre films, but they deal with everything that America has never dealt with because it’s ashamed of it, and other countries don’t really deal with because they don’t feel they have the right to,”

he said at the time.

Last month news about Tarantino’s 8th film started to leak that it would be a spaghetti western titled The Angel, The Bad and The Wise, with Italian veteran Franco Nero, likely for a Tarantino to direct. Then AICN confirmed he was working on a spaghetti western and that it would star Christoph Waltz in a major role. And Quentin confirmed to Deadline that his new script for a Western was just a few months away from being turned in at The Weinsteins and that it had ‘just flowed out of him’ and would probably shoot this year…

In an old Charlie Rose episode (2009), Quentin gave his usual answer that nobodies life is that interesting to do a full biopic but he has always been fascinated by the life of John Brown, a revolutionary U.S. abolitionist who planned a revolt in 1859 to end slavery for good.

So, according to Deadline, Tarantino has finished the script — not like Basterds and Kill Bill, which took a long time to birth and the plan is to deliver something to The Weinstein Company within two months and begin working toward a production start. Fine!

Despite his European heritage, Christoph Waltz physically resembles John Brown, doesn’t he?
