The new indie film Wayward by director Jacquelyn Frohlich offers a raw exploration of family dynamics, freedom, and the rebellious spirit of youth. Released in limited theaters this fall, Wayward promises an intense journey set against the backdrop of an unconventional road trip.

The story follows Cleo (Chloe Guidry), an eleven-year-old girl navigating a significant life change as she moves with her mother from Idaho to Los Angeles. On this journey, they pick up a captivating female hitchhiker who immediately intrigues Cleo. As Cleo spends more time with this stranger, she begins to question her relationship with her mother, creating a complex bond with the hitchhiker that blurs the line between a heartfelt escape and something much darker.

The cast includes Jess Weixler as Cleo's mother, Jessica Sula, Rob Morrow, Will Brittian, and Colleen Camp, each adding depth to this layered story. This is the directorial debut for Colombian filmmaker Jacquelyn Frohlich, who has previously worked on short films and novels, marking Wayward as an impressive entry into feature filmmaking.

Having premiered at the 2023 Deauville Film Festival, Wayward received praise for its unique narrative and psychological tension. Now, Abramorama is bringing it to U.S. audiences, with a limited release beginning in Los Angeles on November 15, 2024.

Wayward not only explores a young girl's emotional journey but also questions the concept of “family” through the eyes of a character craving stability. As Cleo bonds with a stranger, audiences are left to ponder the nature of escape and belonging. Whether you're a fan of coming-of-age dramas or complex character studies, Wayward is worth a watch.

Jacquelyn Frohlich's debut in Wayward is compelling, offering a fresh take on themes of freedom, family, and the complicated boundaries of adolescence. Chloe Guidry's portrayal of Cleo is both heart-wrenching and relatable, capturing the disillusionment that many young people feel. The hitchhiker, whose presence disrupts Cleo's relationship with her mother, is a fascinating addition, bringing out layers in Cleo's character and highlighting her desire for independence.

One standout element of Wayward is its atmosphere, with quiet, scenic shots that intensify the film's underlying tension. Frohlich's unique perspective as a Colombian filmmaker brings a depth to the storytelling that feels authentic and new. Wayward will resonate with anyone who has felt conflicted about their family or personal freedom.

Do you think Cleo's bond with the hitchhiker represents a true friendship or just a desire to escape her family's expectations?
