The final season of Star Trek: Picard gave fans a nostalgic look at familiar characters while introducing new twists. One major highlight was Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine, who seemed destined for a spinoff as the new captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, fans were disappointed when Ryan declined a new Star Trek series pitched to her after Picard ended.
Showrunner Terry Matalas envisioned Star Trek: Legacy, a potential series focused on Ryan's character leading her own Starfleet adventures. But Paramount didn't pick up this concept, and instead, another unnamed spinoff was pitched to Ryan. During Spacecon, Ryan explained that while she appreciated the idea, it simply didn't feel right. “There has been talk… It just wasn't me… It didn't feel like the right kind of thing,” she shared, hinting that she's open to future opportunities but is selective about the roles she takes on within the Star Trek universe.
The Star Trek franchise remains vibrant, with many other projects underway. Fans can enjoy the latest season of Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return for a third season in 2025. Additionally, Michelle Yeoh is set to star in Star Trek: Section 31, releasing in early 2025. Meanwhile, Starfleet Academy, a series set in the 32nd century, is also in production, featuring high-profile stars like Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti.
While Star Trek: Legacy may not become reality, the franchise's future looks promising with these new series and films. Ryan's fans still hope for more of Seven of Nine, and as she says, “never say never.”
Jeri Ryan's decision to decline a Star Trek spinoff speaks volumes about her dedication to finding the right fit for her character. It's refreshing to see an actor prioritize the quality of the storyline and character alignment over quick opportunities. Her cautious approach might pay off in the long run, potentially opening doors for a spinoff with a storyline more in tune with the character's journey. Although Paramount's decision not to greenlight Star Trek: Legacy disappointed fans, it's heartening to see the franchise evolving in new directions with Section 31 and Starfleet Academy. If Ryan does return, fans know it will be with a story worthy of Seven of Nine's legacy.
Do you think Seven of Nine deserves her own Star Trek series, or should the franchise explore new characters and stories?
