We will once again remind you that McQueen directed the whole thing from a script written by
John Ridley, which is based on Northup's autobiography of the same name.
The movie stars
Chiwetel Ejiofor, a free black man from upstate New York who, in the pre-Civil War United States, is abducted and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release.

Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist forever alters his life.
