Charlize Theron To Star In SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE Adaptation

Oscar winner Charlize Theron, who shaved her head for Mad Max: Fury Road earlier this summer, is now set to get revenge in CJ Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures' remake of Park Chan-wook's excellent Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The last in Park's revenge trilogy that started with Sympathy For Mr.Vengeance and continued by Oldboy (Spike Lee‘s remake well underway), centers on a woman who is set to prison for a murder she didn't commit and after being released, she exacts sadistic revenge on the real killer. Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed) has been tapped to pen the script from the 2005 South Korean original which starred Lee Young Ae and Choi Min-sik. Monahan said in the press release announcing the deal:

This will be very American — and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it's the Everest of adaptations and I've got blood in my teeth to do it.

Theron who has just finished Fury Road will star as well as produce Sympathy. She is next attached to John Madden's comedy Murder Mystery, while Monahan recently wrote Sin City: A Dame to Kill For for Robert Rodriguez. Since the press release says he's ‘adapting' the original that could also mean Monahan will serve as both writer and director, but time will show. No word yet on when the film will begin shooting.
