Writing and producing duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman who have penned both previous Star Trek movies, are in talks to craft the third outing for Paramount and Skydance Productions.

J.J. Abrams in also in negotiations to remain aboard the franchise as a producer.

However, Damon Lindelof who shared writing credit on this summer's Star Trek Into Darkness will not be back according to the report.

The question of who'll direct the movie remains wide open as well as a release date, but the studio is likely aiming to have a film out in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series created by Gene Roddenberry.

Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe Retaliation) is rumored to be the top candidate to direct the sequel.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are expected to return to the next Star Trek film which is still untitled.

The action-packed Into Darkness is a fun ride with great special effects, but don't forget what Karl Urban recently said. He voiced a wish shared by many fans about Star Trek 3, saying

… let's not forget that Star Trek as envisioned was about space exploration. And it would be really wonderful to harness the spirit of that and apply it to the next film, so that we do something different than a revenge-based picture.

Amen.
