Eric Roth to Write David Fincher’s Cleopatra Starring Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie and David Fincher So, what's so special about Cleopatra anyway? When I hear that name I immediately think of Elizabeth Taylor and that 1963 version of the whole egyptian-thing. And that's pretty much all because I'm simply not so interested in her adventures…anymore. You, on the other hand, are probably interested in Sony Pictures' upcoming Cleopatra project which has Angelina Jolie attached to star as the Egyptian queen, so maybe you'll like this news after all… The thing is that all of the sudden well known scribe Eric Roth, man behind the Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close story as well as Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, is in early discussions to reteam with producer Scott Rudin on Cleopatra. And as for the rest of the story – I'm sure you're already familiar with it – David Fincher is circling the pic because Angie wants him to direct the whole thing and Brian Helgeland initially adapted it from Stacy Schiff's bestselling book Cleopatra: A Life. Still, nothing confirmed at this moment. The only thing we know is what producer Scott Rudin previously revealed. He promises us “a completely revisionist Cleopatra, a much more grown-up sophisticated version” adding that: “She's not a sex kitten, she's a politician, strategist, warrior. In the Joseph Mankiewicz movie, Elizabeth Taylor is a seductress, but the histories of Cleopatra have been written by men. This is the first to be written by a woman. It felt like such a blow-the-doors-off-the-hinges idea of how to tell it, impossible to resist. We're pretty close. A lot of directors want to do it, but there is only a handful we'll make it with.” So, what do you think about this Fincher-Jolie-Roth combination? Personally, I think Fincher should pass this job.
