Anne Hathaway To Headline Modern TAMING OF THE SHREW Adaptation
The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy by William Shakespeare that tells the story of the timeless battle of the sexes. One of the playwright's most famous works have been adapted for movies and television many times.
Those who doesn't get reading Shakespeare might recognize the story from the 1967 film version with the most famous couple of the 1960s – Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, or perhaps a modern re-telling 10 Things I Hate About You, a teen film, set in Seattle, Washington.
Well, it's time for another retelling of the play set in mid-20th century Italy. Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady) is handling the screenplay, and fresh off a Golden Globe win for her supporting turn in the musical adaptation of Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway is poised to tackle yet another highly regarded property.
It's unknown at this time, but it's assumed Hathaway will play the lead role of Katherina, the ‘shrew' of the title. Katherina, the French princess is pursued by Petrucio, a Verona gentleman who is lured by the woman's hefty dowry. The new take on Shakespeare's comedy will presumably correct some of the original play's more misogynistic elements.
Hathaway's schedule is also pretty free at the moment since Steven Spielberg's sci-fi adaptation Robopocalypse she was set to star has been recently delayed. However, she's up for Best Supporting Actress at next month's Academy Awards and is set to reprise her role voicing Jewel in the upcoming sequel Rio 2.
