Cate Blanchett, known for her stellar performances in films like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Carol,” surprised many when she joined the cast of “Borderlands,” a movie adaptation of the popular video game. Directed by Eli Roth, the film features Blanchett as Lilith, a red-haired outlaw returning to her home planet of Pandora.

In a recent interview with Empire, Blanchett revealed that the unexpected nature of the role was a big draw for her. “The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of,” she said. The timing also played a role, as she signed on during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2021. She humorously mentioned, “I think there also may have been a little COVID madness – I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.'”
Once committed, Blanchett dove into the world of “Borderlands,” even buying a PS5 to understand the game's nuances and what fans loved about the character. “My thumbs can barely control a phone, but I bought a PS5 and we played each other. I got really absorbed in that whole world. The cosplayers. The YouTube make-up tutorials,” she shared.

The film follows Lilith as she forms an alliance with a team of unlikely heroes, including Roland (Kevin Hart), pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), her protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu), the wisecracking robot Claptrap (Jack Black), and the unstable scientist Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis). Together, they battle alien monsters and bandits to find and protect the missing daughter of powerful mogul Atlas (Edgar Ramirez), who may hold the key to unimaginable power.
“Borderlands” has faced its share of challenges, including major reshoots with Tim Miller stepping in for Roth. Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, with additional performances by Haley Bennett, Gina Gershon, Janina Gavankar, Cheyenne Jackson, Steven Boyer, and Benjamin Byron Davis.
Set to hit cinemas on August 9th, “Borderlands” promises to be a thrilling ride, blending sci-fi action with a touch of dark humor. Whether you're a fan of the game or just intrigued by Blanchett's adventurous choice, this film is one to watch.
