Charli XCX Joins Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ as The White Witch

The world of cinema is no stranger to unexpected casting choices, but Greta Gerwig‘s decision to cast Charli XCX as Jadis, The White Witch, in her upcoming adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia is turning heads. The pop icon, known for her electrifying music and avant-garde style, is stepping into one of literature’s most iconic villain roles. Is this a stroke of genius or a risky gamble? Let’s dive in.

Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison, has been making waves in the music industry for over a decade with hits like Boom Clap and 1999. However, her foray into acting is relatively new. She’s already wrapped up four films, including Greg Araki’s I Want Your Sex and Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, both slated for 2025 releases. Now, she’s joining the ranks of Natalie Portman and Saoirse Ronan, who were previously rumored to be in talks for Narnia roles.

Gerwig’s vision for Narnia promises to be a fresh take on C.S. Lewis’s beloved series. Known for her work on Lady Bird and Little Women, Gerwig has a knack for blending emotional depth with cinematic grandeur. Her choice of Charli XCX for the role of Jadis suggests a bold, modern interpretation of the character—one that could redefine how we see The White Witch.

Casting a pop star in such a pivotal role is a gamble, but it’s not without precedent. Lady Gaga‘s transformative performance in A Star is Born proved that musicians can excel in acting when given the right material. Charli XCX’s edgy, boundary-pushing persona aligns well with the enigmatic and menacing nature of Jadis. However, the challenge lies in whether she can embody the character’s complexity and command the screen with the gravitas the role demands.

The rest of the cast is still taking shape, with auditions underway for the two young leads, likely to play Peter and Lucy Pevensie. Saoirse Ronan, a frequent Gerwig collaborator, is rumored to be involved in an undisclosed role, adding further intrigue to the project.

Greta Gerwig’s decision to cast Charli XCX as Jadis is a bold move that could either redefine the character or fall flat. Charli’s unique energy and charisma make her an intriguing choice, but the real test will be her ability to convey the depth and menace of The White Witch. Gerwig’s track record suggests she knows how to bring out the best in her actors, so there’s reason to be optimistic. This adaptation could breathe new life into the Narnia franchise, appealing to both longtime fans and a new generation. What do you think—will Charli XCX’s casting be a masterstroke or a misstep?

“Do you think Charli XCX has what it takes to bring The White Witch to life, or is this casting too far outside the box? Share your thoughts!”
