Chongqing Blues

Chongqing Blues is a title of Chinese drama movie, directed by Wang Xiaoshuai, and written by Yang Yishu and above mentioned director. It was the only Chinese film selected for the official In Competition section at the Cannes Film Festival 2010 so we are here today to have a little chat about this interesting project. You can call it emotional story. You can call it family story. Or, you can just call it moving drama set in the Sichuan city of Chongqing… Let's start with the official Chongqing Blues synopsis: “Lin, a sea captain, returns from a 6 month journey when he is told that his 25-year-old son Lin Bo has been gunned down by the police. In his quest to understand what happened, he realizes he knew very little about his own son. He starts a journey back to Chongqin, a city he once lived. He will understand the impact of his paternal repeated absence on the life of his child.” Cast includes: Wang Xueqi as Lin Quanhai, the father, Fan Bingbing as Zhu Qing, the doctor, Qin Hao as Xiao Hao, the friend, Zi Yi as Lin Bo, the son and Li Feier as Xiao Wen, the girlfriend. And, for the director Wang Xiaoshuai Chongqing Blues means completing an unofficial trilogy that started with Beijing Bicycle in 2002 and continued with Shanghai Dreams in 2005 (let's just remind you that Shanghai Dreams won the Cannes' Jury Prize that year). Like many Chinese films being made today, Chongqing Blues needs to find international audiences, and here is how the director explained it: “Chinese artistic films will not bloom in 20 years' time, not until the generation after the next generation becomes the mainstream of society. We can only put our hope in educating and purifying their next generation.” After screening at Cannes, Chongqing Blues is scheduled to open in local cinemas in September 2010.
