Horror fans, take note: Lee Cronin, the visionary director behind “The Hole in the Ground” and “Evil Dead Rise,” has officially announced his latest project—a reimagining of “The Mummy.” Collaborating with New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Blumhouse, Cronin aims to resurrect the ancient tale in ways never seen before.

Cronin, who is not one to shy away from unsettling audiences, is both writing and directing this ambitious project. The film marks his third feature and will be co-produced under his company Doppelgängers. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin teased his radical approach:

“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I'm digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

While the announcement of a new “Mummy” film might immediately conjure thoughts of Universal's classic 1932 version starring Boris Karloff, Cronin's vision explicitly breaks from that legacy. His project is neither a homage to the 1930s original nor a retread of Stephen Sommers' 1999 action-packed trilogy, which became a pop culture phenomenon in its own right. It also distances itself from the ill-fated 2017 reboot featuring Tom Cruise, which struggled to establish a shared “Dark Universe” for Universal's monsters.

Instead, Cronin promises something deeper, darker, and far more terrifying—a return to the raw, elemental fear of ancient mythology.

A Fresh Start for “The Mummy”

This new adaptation is supported by some of the heaviest hitters in modern horror. Producers James Wan and Jason Blum—known for redefining horror with franchises like “Insidious” and “The Conjuring”—join forces with Cronin to deliver a unique cinematic experience. The trio's involvement hints at a potent blend of psychological tension, visceral scares, and rich storytelling. John Keville, Cronin's long-time collaborator, is also on board to ensure the film aligns with the director's distinctive creative vision.

With a release date set for April 17, 2026, anticipation is already building among fans of the genre.

A Legacy Reimagined

Cronin's take could be the revitalization the “Mummy” franchise desperately needs. The story of a cursed, ancient being returning from the dead has captivated audiences for nearly a century. However, many adaptations have leaned heavily on either gothic romance or high-octane spectacle. Cronin's words suggest a more primal, horrifying interpretation—something closer to the unsettling mythological roots of the undead mummy.

The shift toward horror as a primary lens aligns well with Cronin's directorial style. Both “The Hole in the Ground” and “Evil Dead Rise” showcased his talent for combining emotional depth with harrowing terror. Fans of these films can likely expect a “Mummy” that's deeply atmospheric, with a narrative that emphasizes fear of the unknown.

My Impressions

Lee Cronin's involvement is nothing short of thrilling. Few directors working today have his knack for unsettling audiences while crafting compelling, character-driven stories. His previous films managed to balance intimate, human drama with supernatural horror—a combination that could breathe new life into the “Mummy” legend.

The film's release also carries significant expectations, considering its attachment to New Line Cinema and Blumhouse, both studios renowned for consistently pushing the boundaries of horror. Could this be the definitive “Mummy” adaptation—a film that explores the existential dread of mortality and the monstrous consequences of defying it? If Cronin delivers on his promise, horror fans might be in for a masterpiece.
