Paramount+ with Showtime has unveiled the official trailer for “Dexter: Original Sin”, the highly anticipated prequel to the groundbreaking series Dexter. Set in the 1990s, this ten-episode journey takes fans back to the formative years of Dexter Morgan, offering a deep dive into the makings of the complex vigilante serial killer.
Launching on December 13, 2024, the series will premiere for streaming and on-demand subscribers before debuting on U.S. linear broadcast on December 15.
Unlike the original series starring Michael C. Hall, this prequel introduces a new cast, with Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone) stepping into the role of a young Dexter Morgan. The storyline picks up 15 years before Dexter: New Blood, with the titular character as a college student grappling with his burgeoning homicidal tendencies. Guided by his father, Harry (played by Christian Slater), Dexter learns the infamous “Code,” a set of rules designed to channel his dark urges toward morally justified killings while avoiding capture.
Fans will recognize younger versions of pivotal characters, including Dexter's sister Debra (Molly Brown), Angel Batista (James Martinez), Maria LaGuerta (Christina Milian), and Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu). New faces like Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar join as leaders within Miami Metro Police's homicide and CSI departments, adding fresh dynamics to the narrative.
The show is narrated by Michael C. Hall, tying the past and present as Dexter reflects on his life while facing life-threatening surgery after the events of Dexter: New Blood. With this gripping origin story, Dexter: Original Sin promises fans a deeper understanding of Dexter's duality, layered with suspense and moral ambiguity.
Looking ahead, the saga will continue with “Dexter: Resurrection”, reuniting Hall with the character in the timeline following New Blood.
The trailer for Dexter: Original Sin captures a hauntingly nostalgic essence while offering a fresh perspective on one of television's most compelling antiheroes. Patrick Gibson seems to bring a raw vulnerability to young Dexter, and the inclusion of Christian Slater as Harry is inspired casting, adding depth to the father-son dynamic.
While revisiting iconic characters like Debra and LaGuerta adds excitement, the series faces the challenge of living up to the original's brilliance. The prequel format offers a fascinating opportunity to explore unanswered questions about Dexter's development, but it risks treading familiar territory.
If executed well, the series could reignite the passion of longtime fans while attracting new viewers curious about the origins of this morally complex character. The anticipation for Dexter: Resurrection adds another layer of excitement to this expanding universe.
