Netflix has landed a live-action series based on the classic Warner Bros. IP “Scooby-Doo” with a significant commitment, according to sources. The project, titled “Scooby-Doo The Live-Action Series,” is being developed by Greg Berlanti‘s Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg writing the script and serving as executive producers alongside André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner. The series will be rooted in the beloved Hanna-Barbera cartoon, but specific plot details are being kept under wraps.
This new series marks a significant milestone in the franchise's history, which has seen various animated projects and live-action adaptations over the years. The most recent live-action film was released in 2002, starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini. The franchise has also seen a range of animated series and films, including the animated film “Scoob Holiday Haunt,” which was initially planned for release on Max but was ultimately shelved due to budget cuts.
The deal comes on the heels of Netflix releasing Berlanti Productions/WBTV's latest series, “Dead Boy Detectives,” which landed on the streamer's daily Top 10 U.S. series list within 24 hours and stayed in the Top 3 all weekend. Berlanti Productions and WBTV are also behind “You,” headed into its fifth and final season, and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”.
Will this new live-action series bring a fresh perspective to the beloved franchise, or will it stick to the classic formula that fans have come to love?
