The Sicario franchise is set to thrill audiences once again with its third installment. Fans of the series can rejoice as producers Basil Iwanyk (John Wick) and Erica Lee have officially confirmed that Sicario 3 is in the works. During a recent interview with The Messenger, the producers expressed their enthusiasm for the project and their excitement to see Benicio del Toro reprising his role as the enigmatic assassin, Alejandro Gillick.

“We're looking forward to seeing Benicio del Toro back in action,” said Iwanyk. “The idea for the third film is awesome, and while the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have put a temporary hold on writing, we can't wait to dive back in.” Iwanyk also emphasized his admiration for del Toro's performance, stating, “I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn't get old.”

The original Sicario, released in 2015, was written by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and directed by Denis Villeneuve (Dune). It starred Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro. The film followed FBI Agent Kate Macer (Blunt) on a mission to take down a powerful Mexican drug cartel leader. Brolin portrayed officer Matt Graver, while del Toro's character, Alejandro, was a former Mexican prosecutor turned CIA-trained assassin seeking revenge for his family's murder by the cartel. The film received widespread acclaim for its gripping storytelling and intense performances.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado followed in 2018, with del Toro and Brolin reprising their roles. While Stefano Sollima, the director of Sicario 2, has ruled himself out of directing the third film, he expressed hope that the new director would bring a fresh perspective to the franchise. “You shouldn't have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise,” Sollima told Variety.

Although the exact release date for Sicario 3 remains uncertain, the confirmation of its development has certainly generated excitement. With a stellar cast and a promising storyline, fans can eagerly anticipate another intense, action-packed chapter in the Sicario saga. Keep an eye out for further updates as we await the return of Alejandro Gillick and the gripping world of Sicario.
