The Art of the Non-Kiss: Spielberg's Impact on “Twisters”

This weekend, the much-anticipated “Twisters” stormed into theaters, capturing the attention of moviegoers and critics alike. While Glen Powell's wet t-shirt scene created a buzz, it was the film's ending that became the real talk of the town. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and featuring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, “Twisters” delivers a thrilling throwback to 1990s blockbusters. However, one notable element from that era is conspicuously absent: the kiss.

SPOILER ALERT: Ending of “Twisters” Discussed Below

In the film's climax, Tyler Owens (Powell) races against time to stop Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) from boarding a flight back home. Instead of ending with a passionate kiss, the scene concludes with the pair running off to chase another storm, symbolizing their shared passion and ongoing journey together. This creative choice sparked debates among audiences, especially after behind-the-scenes footage confirmed that a kiss had been filmed but ultimately cut.

Director Lee Isaac Chung revealed to EW that the kiss was tested with audiences but received mixed reactions. “I feel like audiences are in a different place now in terms of wanting a kiss or not wanting a kiss,” Chung explained. He believed that ending the film with a kiss would undermine Kate's character arc, making it seem like her journey was solely about romance. Instead, the chosen ending gives her character more depth and purpose.

Chung's decision was supported by none other than Steven Spielberg, one of the film's producers, who suggested cutting the kiss. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, in an interview with Collider, acknowledged Spielberg's influence. Edgar-Jones noted, “I think it stops the film from feeling too clichéd… This isn't the end of their story. They're united by their shared passion for something.” Powell added, “A kiss would be sort of unrepresentative of the right goal at the end of the movie… It's a good Spielberg note.”

“Twisters,” now playing in cinemas, showcases how thoughtful creative decisions can redefine traditional storytelling, resonating with modern audiences while honoring the spirit of classic blockbusters. With a stellar cast and the backing of industry legends like Spielberg, the film promises a thrilling ride without succumbing to predictable tropes. Don't miss this captivating adventure that leaves room for imagination and more storms to chase.
