Rupert Sanders' highly anticipated remake of The Crow is headed to Video on Demand (VOD) just two weeks after its theatrical release, a clear sign that the film has struggled to find its footing. Set to debut on VOD on September 13, The Crow has grossed only $9 million domestically on a hefty $50 million budget—a disastrous outcome for Lionsgate.
The film's underwhelming box office performance wasn't entirely unexpected. In its second week, The Crow failed to crack the top 10, earning just $1.8 million. Despite the legacy of the original 1994 cult classic, critics and audiences have been brutal in their assessments. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 23%, the remake was destined to stumble. Many questioned the need for a remake in the first place, especially after the film languished in development hell for over 15 years.
Lionsgate, already reeling from the failure of Borderlands, has taken another hit with The Crow. And with bleak projections for upcoming releases like Megalopolis and Flight Risk, the studio is clearly facing a challenging time.
While The Crow's theatrical run was a disappointment, it will be interesting to see if VOD offers any redemption. Unfortunately, even a strong digital performance may not save this ill-fated remake from being remembered as a misstep in the world of reboots.
