Richard Gale’s comedy/horror short film “The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon”  surged in popularity immediately after its release on YouTube, receiving more than 900,000 views in three weeks to become the No. 1 Top Favorited and No. 2 Top Rated film this month on YouTube in the Film and Animation category. Since the YouTube launch, Horribly Slow Murderer … has been featured on G4TV’s Attack of the Show, and Hollywood is calling: Mr. Gale recently had his first meeting with an Oscar-winning production company, which contacted him after seeing his film online.
“This was the best route to take with my film”
says Mr. Gale, a three-time Los Angeles Area Emmy winner, who rejected paid offers from short film distributors after his film won 12 awards on the festival circuit.
“I would’ve been prohibited from releasing it online for years, had I gone with a short film distributor, and likely, only a few cable channels would have run my work. Traditionally, even Oscar-winning shorts rarely get seen by the general public. Now, I can showcase my work on YouTube full screen, in HD quality. And my film is gaining a following.”
Mr. Gale’s film, a 10 minute faux movie trailer in which a man encounters what may be the most relentless murderer of all time, is keeping up with some of Hollywood’s biggest offerings: Horribly Slow Murderer …. ranks in the Top 5 Most Viewed this Month in the Film & Animation category, alongside the latest trailers for Twilight: New Moon and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia.
“Like any filmmaker, I want to give my work the greatest exposure possible,” says Mr. Gale. “YouTube is really the world’s biggest film festival. No films get rejected, there are tens of millions to choose from, and everyone in the world gets to judge your work. It’s a great proving-ground. And unlike many festivals, there are no submission fees.”
“The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon”was produced, written and directed by Richard Gale. The film stars Paul Clemens, Brian Rohan, Fay Kato, Melissa Paladino, and Mike Kacey, with music by Christopher Brady, and special makeup FX by Dean Jones.
