Hit Man

As observed in the movie business, some of the most engrossing plots are based on real-life events. Another example is Netflix's recently released ‘Hit Man' directed by Richard Linklater with Glen Powell. This movie, which premieres in theaters on May 24 and is available for streaming on Netflix on June 7, tells the story of a college professor who turned into a fake hitman named Gary Johnson.

The story of Gary Johnson is one of rags to riches or rather from a poor background to a successful businessman. Johnson, born in 1947 in rural Louisiana, led a contrite life full of contradictions. He was deployed to Vietnam where he served as a military policeman before transitioning to law enforcement in his home country. His career changed direction in 1989 when joined the Harris County district attorney's office where he had a 30-year career, impersonating a fake hitman.

Glen Powell, who also served as one of the screenwriters of this film along with Linklater, has done an excellent job portraying Johnson. Powell's portrayal is nuanced, capturing the duality of Johnson's life: a man who could convincingly pretend to be a contract killer to criminals and a pious, animals-loving Buddhist in his spare time.

It follows Johnson's rise and fall, and peculiarity of his lifestyles, it is the dramatized aspect of the love interest that create the exciting spin. Johnson's character, named John Powell, in the film is shown to be in love with a woman, Maddy portrayed by Adria Arjona, a woman who wants a hired killer to eliminate her abusive husband. The basis for this fictional element is based on a true story where Johnson had assisted a woman in escaping her abusive partner instead of arresting her.

”Hit Man” is an excellent example of Powell's commitment to storytelling. As a producer, he said that he was looking forward to creating and sharing new ideas that are absent from movie theaters. This film is not only funny and engaging but also dedicated to the real Gary Johnson who succumbed to death in 2022 when shooting was yet to start.

In the story ‘Hit Man' you have a man whose life was a combination of being brave and being merciful, switching between the life of a criminal and a changed man. Due to the infusion of reality and drama ‘Hit Man' becomes quite interesting and full of suspense that ensures the audiences do not miss out on any moment. Be sure not to watch this amazing movie when it premieres on Netflix next June.
