Warner Bros. is reportedly courting Tom Cruise to star opposite Beyonce in Clint Eastwood‘s remake of A Star Is Born.
One of the screen’s classic love stories, A Star Is Born has hit the big screen three times previously.
In the 1937 A Star Is Born, helmed by William Wellman, Janet Gaynor plays gorgeous, sweet and an aspiring actress Esther Blodgett. In 1954, Judy Garland used the film as a comeback vehicle to revive her career. Director George Cukor and writer Moss Hart turned the story into a rousing musical. When Barbra Streisand decided to remake this evergreen movie in 1976, she moved the action from Hollywood to the world of rock and roll.
Clint Eastwood is aiming to keep Streisand’s rock setting so Axl Rose-like 80s rock star, Cruise could end up showing off his singing skills for one more time. Cruise will be playing the washed-up musician who helps boost the career of a rising star he falls in love with. As you might know A Star Is Born revolves around a romantic relationship between an alcoholic star on his way out and a young female artist on the rise.
Christian Bale, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Leonardo DiCaprio have all declined the lead role previously.
Cruise has two sci-fi biggie projects on his plate at the moment – Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion, and Doug Liman’s We Mortals Are.
Beyonce has far better street cred than Barbra, but neither she has confirmed anything just yet.
