Tom Cruise Teams Up with Christopher McQuarrie for WWII Epic ‘Broadsword'

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are set to collaborate once again, this time on a WWII epic titled ‘Broadsword.' This dynamic duo, known for their successful partnership in the ‘Mission: Impossible' series, promises to bring a thrilling and intense war story to the big screen. ‘Broadsword' will be produced by Warner Bros as part of their recent deal with Cruise, and it is set to shoot next year, potentially before or after Cruise's project with Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The film centers on an S.O.E. operation during WWII, following a marine captain who crashes in France and becomes the sole survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war. This storyline suggests a blend of historical drama and high-stakes action, making it a perfect fit for both Cruise and McQuarrie.

Christopher McQuarrie

Christopher McQuarrie, who won an Oscar for ‘The Usual Suspects,' has become Cruise's go-to collaborator, having directed and written several of Cruise's blockbuster hits. Their previous projects include ‘Jack Reacher,' ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,' ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout,' and the upcoming ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning' parts one and two. Additionally, McQuarrie has contributed to the writing and producing teams for Cruise films like ‘Valkyrie,' ‘Edge of Tomorrow,' ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,' ‘The Mummy,' and ‘Top Gun: Maverick.'

‘Broadsword' also marks Cruise's return to WWII-themed movies after his 2008 film ‘Valkyrie.' The screenplay for ‘Broadsword' is being penned by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, who co-wrote ‘Mission: Impossible 8.' McQuarrie has hinted that this project might be the highly anticipated “Gnarly Movie” he and Cruise have been discussing.

In a recent interview with Empire, McQuarrie mentioned that after completing work on ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,' he and Cruise would move on to their next project, which fans have dubbed ‘The Gnarly Movie.' Described as having a “very un-Tom character” and being “hard-edged,” this film could potentially be the WWII epic ‘Broadsword.'

With a compelling storyline, the proven collaboration between Cruise and McQuarrie, and the backdrop of WWII, ‘Broadsword' is shaping up to be a must-watch film. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project, which is sure to captivate audiences and deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience.
