Warner Bros’ Concerns About James Gunn’s ‘Superman’: Early Screening Sparks Debate

A private screening of James Gunn’s Superman reportedly left Warner Bros. “nervous” about the film’s direction. Is it a misstep or another underdog story in the making?

When it comes to beloved characters like Superman, the stakes are always high. The last son of Krypton is more than just a superhero—he's an icon of hope, justice, and the cinematic future of DC Studios. But recent rumblings from a private screening of James Gunn's upcoming Superman have reportedly set Warner Bros. executives on edge. Industry insiders have hinted at a less-than-stellar early cut, and the buzz is growing louder. Could this be a temporary hiccup on the road to greatness, or does it spell trouble for DC's ambitious reboot?

The Screening That Started the Stir

On December 6, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a private screening of James Gunn's Superman took place on the Warner Bros. lot. The event, shrouded in secrecy, featured Gunn's trusted inner circle. The publication teased details, mentioning “a few days of additional shooting” planned in Los Angeles but offered no commentary on the film's quality.

Why the radio silence? Film journalists often include positive early reactions in these reports if there's good news to share. The absence of such feedback felt ominous to many, including seasoned journalist Jeff Sneider.

Sneider, known for his accurate scoops, reported hearing from a “rock-solid source” that the current cut of Superman is “kind of a mess.” Warner Bros. executives, he claims, are “nervous” about the film's trajectory.

Context: Early Screenings vs. Final Product

Historically, early screenings can be misleading. Films often undergo significant edits, reshoots, and touch-ups after initial test screenings. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, also directed by Gunn, famously faced skepticism during its early stages, only to become a blockbuster hit.

However, the comparison invites scrutiny. Unlike Guardians, which introduced relatively obscure characters, Superman carries the weight of a decades-old legacy. From Christopher Reeve's Superman (1978) to Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013), the character has faced a cinematic rollercoaster, with fans yearning for a definitive modern adaptation.

Warner Bros.' Dilemma

Warner Bros. has much riding on Superman. The film marks a critical step in Gunn's overarching vision for the DC Universe, unveiled earlier this year. A rocky reception could jeopardize the studio's carefully planned roadmap, which includes interconnected films, series, and spin-offs.

Yet, as history shows, early buzz—positive or negative—does not guarantee a film's outcome. Both Superman Returns (2006) and Man of Steel had glowing pre-release hype but failed to achieve universal acclaim.

Gunn's Reputation on the Line

James Gunn, known for his quirky, character-driven approach, has thrived in projects with creative freedom. However, Superman demands a delicate balance between innovation and reverence for the source material. Fans expect not only a fresh take but one that honors the character's legacy.

The mixed reports surrounding Superman serve as a reminder of the challenges inherent in crafting a film of this scale. With seven months until its release, there's ample time for adjustments. Whether Superman emerges as a triumphant underdog or another polarizing entry in DC's lineup, one thing is clear: the stakes couldn't be higher.

My Impressions: As a lifelong fan of the Man of Steel, I'm cautiously optimistic. Gunn has a knack for storytelling, and while the early buzz is concerning, it's not uncommon for films to stumble during production. Superman embodies resilience, and perhaps his latest cinematic journey mirrors that. Still, Warner Bros. must tread carefully; audiences are less forgiving after years of uneven DC films.
