Rubber

Quentin Dupieux, or if you prefer Mr. Oizo, is a techno musician and director from France, and we are here today to have a little chat about his new project titled Rubber, that was the part of this year’s special screening in the International Critic’s Week competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

And let’s just say this at the beginning: this is pretty weird story. But you can call it original as well (…if you like tires that go around and act as if they were alive…). Ok, weird then!

This is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire, and if you’re still confused, here’s the full Rubber synopsis:

“A group of spectators is watching a mock-projection in the middle of the desert. They make comments on the scenes of the “film” as it is occurring before their eyes: Robert, a tire that has been abandoned in the desert, suddenly comes to life, for no reason.

He learns how to get around, explores the desert, and as he roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move.

At first content to wreak havoc on small desert creatures and various lost items, his attention soon turns to humans, resulting in the most gory vehicular-related mayhem inflicted on screen by an “inanimate” object since Christine.”

As you see, in the Californian desert, everything is possible! And this is definitely the world’s first killer tire movie, written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, who explained:

“I’m still naïve enough to believe that there is still room for unconscious and format-free films…The too formatted films, structured as emotional machines, annoy me. I like the idea of doing a film on a living tire, with no narrative structure nor dramatic stakes.

It’s possible! Also, The budget was very limited: I conceived the script, taking into account our means, and I like working like that a lot.”

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired US rights to Rubber.

Magnet SVP Tom Quinn negotiated the deal with Elle Driver’s Eva Diederix and Adeline Fontan Tessaur.

“Robert the tire has to be the most unforgettable villain of the decade,” said Quinn. “Quentin Dupieux is a crazy genius.”

”Rubber is such an original, quirky film that we couldn’t imagine a better distributor than Magnet. This film is completely crazy – I can’t wait to see the reactions of US audiences,” said Adeline Fontan Tessaur of Elle Driver.

Movie stars Stephen Spinella, Roxane Mesquida, Jack Plotnick, Wings Hauser, Ethan Cohn and Charley Koontz.
