Ridley Scott to Produce/Direct Cold War Drama Reykjavik

Reykjavik Summit

The second summit meeting between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, held October 11–12, 1986, to discuss nuclear arms control. The meeting resulted in international controversy when news reports, later confirmed by U.S. officials, revealed that Reagan unexpectedly proposed the elimination of all nuclear weapons—to the disappointment of NATO countries that depended on the American nuclear umbrella for national security against overpowering Soviet superiority in conventional arms.

A new film called Reykjavik is based on this true story. Ridley Scott, director attached to more projects than any other filmmaker, will helm a political drama for the British production company Headline Pictures.

Reykjavik is one older project Scott was originally linked way back in 2008. The film is scripted by Kevin Hood (Becoming Jane).

Currently filming his sort of Alien prequel Prometheus, Scott has set up a version of the sci-fi classic novels Brave New World and The Forever War, a film noir with Casey Affleck called The Kind One, an adaptation of the Monopoly board game, a biopic of fashion icon Gucci, the soviet thriller Child 44 as well as probable further entries in his Robin Hood saga.

The American Gangster helmer said about finding fitting actors for the lead roles:

In some way, you’d want to go for an unknown. But both characters are at a certain age, so inevitably you want to go for someone with experience. The physical resemblance is secondary. It’s less about visible appearance, more about the acting. But you have to acknowledge the physicality. Reagan was tall and elegant while Gorbachev was stocky, like a front row rugby player. In some ways, Gorbachev is easier to cast. Reagan is more colourful.”
