Box Office: No Strings Attached Estimated Weekend $20M
Ivan Reitman-directed romantic comedy No Strings Attached, opened solidly to $7.3 million Friday, according to studio estimates, putting the R-rated Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman film on pace to match pre-release tracking forecasts of around $20 million. Budgeted at $25 million, “No Strings” debuted in 3,018 theaters with semisoft reviews (49 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but great tracking among women under 25, with 57 percent of that demographic convey explicit interest in seeing the movie, according to one tracking firm.
The first thing you should know about “No Strings Attached” is that it’s not a true romantic comedy but a sex comedy with romantic ambitions; the second is that it’s brighter and cuter than many of its recent fellows. On opening night, the movie played to theaters across the country packed full of young women (and a lot of guys who want to make out).
Sony’s The Green Hornet finished in second place Friday with $7.3 million. The $130 million Seth Rogen 3D action movie should cross the $60 million mark domestically by the end of the weekend, while experiencing a week-to-week drop of under 50 percent, if projections delay.
Universal buddy comedy The Dilemma is in third place with an estimated $3 million on Friday. The Ron Howard-directed movie, which stars Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, is expected to bring in over $9 million this weekend and also drop less than 50 percent from its premiere week.
The Green Hornet Review
The Green Hornet is a disjointed jumble of gag laughs, goofy stunts, and bizzare casting. Director Michel Gondry, known for more artsy faire (Be Kind Rewind, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), has tremendous skill as a director; but is unfortunately out of place here. His style choices for this film, especially the action scenes, are not fluid and adds to an overall clunky feeling. I can’t help but think a more mainstream director would have been better suited to make this kind of movie. The Green Hornet is actually a remake of a forties serial which was adapted again into a classic sixties TV series. The TV show was short lived, but introduced the world to one of the baddest ass mofo’s in cinema history – Bruce Lee. I seriously doubt this version of The Green Hornet will turn Jay Chou into a star, but stranger things have happened…read more [MovieWeb]

New Green Hornet Poster
Below we have the second poster for the upcoming The Green Hornet film, starring Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, and Christoph Waltz.
Synopsis: When co-founder of a San Francisco newspaper The Daily Sentinel, John Paul, is shot in his home, Frank Scanlon, district attorney, considers John’s position as a crime and politics reporter and rules out robbery as a motive. Britt Reid, publisher for the Sentinel, promises his father, Dan, who’d co-founded The Sentinel with John, that he won’t rest until he finds out who did this.
At the paper, John’s former position as executive TV producer is taken over by Rex, a shameless opportunist, who exhibits not one trace of remorse for the company’s recent loss. In fact, the first meeting he holds in his new office is with a goon named Tommy, who inquires about what Rex plans to do with his newfound corporate capital. When Rex suggests that he’s thinking of bowing out with his cut after an illicit job they’ve just completed, Tommy won’t allow it and tells Rex that the crew needs something of him–the ability to communicate anywhere, in real-time, without being detected via discreet usage of his TV station for two weeks–if anyone can manipulate info, it’s newsmen, he says. With the right people in key positions within The Sentinel, he concludes, anything is possible. He promptly gives Rex a short list of people to fire.
