Sony Schedules Three Films for Summer 2012

Nick Martin July 25, 2024 1 comment
Sony Pictures | Columbia Pictures

Sony will build up its summer 2012 schedule as Columbia Pictures add three highly anticipated movies; it was announced by Jeff Blake, Marketing and Distribution chairman for Sony Pictures.

The trio joining Sony's already strong slate, which includes franchise tentpoles Men In Black 3, in 3D on May 25, and The Amazing Spider-Man in 3D on July 3.

The studio's starting I Hate You, Dad; Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg starring on June 22. Here Comes the Boom, with Kevin James, is set to bow on July 27, followed by the Total Recall re-imagine, leading Colin Farrell, on Aug. 3.

To explain the announcement, Blake said,

Not only do we have two of our most exciting franchises back in theaters with Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, but the three movies we added to the slate today round out a fantastic schedule. We love comedy in the summer and you can't ask for better stars than Adam Sandler and Kevin James. Total Recall has us excited not only because of its incredible pedigree – we love the original story and the first film – but we think this new project will really hit home with a new generation of moviegoers.”

“I Hate You, Dad,” about a father (Sandler) who moves in on the eve of his son's (Samberg) wedding and begins arguing with the bride-to-be, is about to be a remarkable profit for the studio as Sandler holds steady at box office – equal to James' comedy “Here Comes the Boom,” who's Grown Ups (also with Sandler) became long legged hit for the studio last summer. In the comedy Kevin James stars as a high school biology teacher who works after hours as a MMA fighter in an endeavor to raise money to save the school's music program.

“Total Recall,” a new remake of the 1990 sci-fi saga, boosts Sony's particularly strong summer tentpole slate together with “Men in Black” and “Spider-Man.” The short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” was used as the source for the 1990 Motion Picture screen story helmed Schwarzenneger. In Sony's “Total Recall” Colin Farrell gets cast as Douglas Quaid and Len Wiseman helms.

Maybe they will bring something different to the table, we shall see.

There is almost no way the new Total Recall will be as good as the original one. With that said though, I am definitely game to see a new one made…I mean why the hell not? If it’s good, great. If it’s bad, oh well they tried, it doesn’t take anything away from the original being brilliant.
