TIFF 2011: WHERE DO WE GO NOW? Won TIFF People’s Choice Awards

Where Do We Go Now So, this year’s TIFF is over, and as I said in one or our previous reports, it was definitely one of those film festival full of surprises. Just in case you’re wondering why, you should check out the rest of this report and find out the winners. But in the meanwhile, I will also remind you to take a little look at all those crazy titles that we already had a little chat about, because we will be hearing a lot more about them very soon. At the very beginning of this story, let’s have a little chat about a project titled Where Do We Go Now? which comes from director Nadine Labaki. Why? Well, here’s the thing, this Lebanese drama won the top prize, or if you prefer, The Cadillac People’s Choice Award, so it’s definitely something special (at least we hope so). The movie tells the story of a Lebanese village inhabited by both Muslims and Christians. Women inside the village are determined to protect their community from some outside forces that are trying to bring inter-religious tensions inside. Just in case you’re not so satisfied with the official synopsis part, let me also add that they already describe this movie as “a heartfelt and charming musical follow-up feature to director Labaki’s widely successful Caramel. So, if you liked that one, I’m sure you’ll check out Where Do We Go Now as well. As for the rest of the categories Nathan Morlando’s crime drama Edwin Boyd won Best Canadian First Feature Film, Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film, and Ian Harnarine’ Doubles With Slight Pepper won the award for Best Canadian Short Film. Documentaries also had good time out there, and especially Jon Shenk’s The Island President, while Gareth Evans’ The Raid won the award for The Cadillac People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award.
