Godzilla Heading to Theaters in 2012
Legendary Pictures has announced that they will start developing a new Godzilla movie based on the legendary monster. They have obtained rights to the iconic character from Japan's Toho Company, which is responsible for over 25 Godzilla movies.
Legendary is producing the movie through a deal with Warner Bros., and hope to announce a director soon to helm the movie. Looks like that date will arrive in 2012, when the film is slated for release.
Back in 1998, director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) turned the character into a summer blockbuster that grossed $379 million worldwide.
Here's the press release:
Legendary Pictures announced today that they will develop and produce a new film based on Toho Company's famed GODZILLA character. Through the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a movie inspired by Toho's Godzilla, a franchise the Japanese company created and has nurtured for over fifty years.
Toho's GODZILLA franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide. Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible. The company will, in the near future, announce a filmmaker to helm the film for an intended 2012 release. The film will fall under the company's co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Toho will distribute the film in Japan.
“Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise,” said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. “Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has.”
“Godzilla is a signature Japanese character which we have nurtured over the years. It is a great honor to reach an agreement with Legendary Pictures, the parent to many a blockbuster film, and we are delighted in rebooting the character together to realize its much anticipated return by fans from all over the world,” comments Hideyuki Takai, President of Toho Co., Ltd. “We are anxious to find out where Godzilla's new stomping will take us.”
“Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known. We have enjoyed a great deal of success together to date and this newest opportunity represents yet another chance for us to collaborate on a property that is very clearly in their wheelhouse,” said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
In addition to Legendary, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will Executive Produce.

Cool, I love Godzilla. He def deserves a Reboot for that Crappy 1998 movie.
Long live Godzilla!
I cant wait to see this new Godzilla movie. I was very surprised to hear that Toho sold the rights of Godzilla. I hope Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures make a good Godzilla movie and keep Godzilla looking like himself from the last 6 Godzilla movies made by Toho. I wonder how big Godzilla will be? In the last Godzilla movie in 2004 he was 325 ft tall. I think it would be a good idea if Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers went to G-Fest a Godzilla convention held in Chicago each year every july and have a Q&A session and talk to the most diehard Godzilla fans in the country about their upcoming 2012 Godzilla movie.
I’m in FULL agreement, with the second poster David. It would behoove them MAJORLY, to check out those “Kaiju film conventions”. Especially, in getting a “feel”, for what die hard Kaiju fans enjoy seeing. And most importantly, what has “captivated” there attention for so long. I truly hope, that Toho has a LARGE influence, on the creation of this new film. I think Americans realized, back in 1998, that we simply CANNOT make good Kaiju films. However, if something were “collaborated”, by both companies, its almost a guaranteed success. In closing, and being a LONG time fan, of Toho’s films through the years. I truly hope this time around, we can do things right, and “resurrect” this new series of Kaiju films, a HUGE American box off attraction for many years to come.
