Jane Campion's “
Bright Star” competed for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Though Campion's movie came away from Cannes with no awards, its premiere generated respectable reviews. The poster for the movie has finally appeared online. Check it out below.
“Bright Star” is a period drama about the romance of 19th-century English poet
John Keats and
Fanny Brawne. The three-year romance between them was cut short by Keats' untimely death at age 25.
Like in Campion's earlier work, “
The Piano,” the most charged meetings between the two lovers, John and Fanny, involve crossing a forest, the liminal zone of desire, as in a fairytale. We also have the classic Campion touch of peering through windows, emphasizing the voyeuristic quality of new desire.
The movie directed by Jane Campion from her own script stars
Abbie Cornish, Ben Whishaw, Paul Schneider and
Kerry Fox and is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2009.
