Jay Baruchel to Rock in THE REBEL KIND

Jay Baruchel

Well, The Modernettes, they featured a roly-poly young man with a sneer and an American Civil War kepi (the rebel kind), a tall blonde with legs from here to Dunsmuir called Mary Jo Kopechne (she liked to explain that both she and her namesake could not swim) and a non-stopping drummer called Jughead. This trio, The Modernettes, plaid very loud and very off-key. John Armstrong is, on the other hand, the author of Guilty of Everything (New Star, 2001), an autobiographical account of his life as Buck Cherry in Vancouver's old-school punk scene and he is also the author of his second book Wages (New Star, 2007). However, another Canadian named Jay Baruchel, but a rising star in Hollywood is set to star in The Rebel Kind, based on the memoirs by above-mentioned notable guy, who ‘currently lives in East Vancouver's Skid Row with a Rotweiller named BoBo and in his spare time he drinks.' So, the film takes its title from the song of the same name by The Modernettes. The movie will center on the emerging punk rock scene in Vancouver during the 1980s via a successful band that throws in the towel, realizing the deep cost to pursue their dreams of pop superstardom. The project is being written and directed by Reg Harkema, who has directed Monkey Warfare, Leslie, My Name is Evil, but also recently worked as an editor on Goon, the upcoming hockey comedy which also stars Baruchel. The Rebel Kind producer Kevin Eastwood said about the project,
A lot of people don't realize that Vancouver was a huge hotbed of musical activity in the early 80s. At the time, Vancouver was one of the three axis points of the universe — there was London, New York — and then there was Vancouver.
Baruchel, best known for his comedic roles, came out with three movies in 2010: How to Train Your Dragon, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and She's Out of My League. He is also set to star and direct the comedy/horror/slasher film Pig. The report doesn't specify if this punk period piece will be a comedy or a drama. Let's be patient.
