Brad Peyton, the director behind Netflix's latest sci-fi film, Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez, reveals that the movie was inspired by Titanfall, but not in the way many assumed. Peyton, who is known for his previous works such as San Andreas and Rampage, tells Total Film that the movie is more “Castaway in Space” than a first-person shooter video game.
Peyton, a self-proclaimed sci-fi enthusiast, wanted to ensure that Atlas stood out from the crowd. He explains, “I didn't want to retread what's been done well before. So that was Avatar, Aliens… Titanfall, a few other old movies I loved from the 80s – and then to make sure the scale of mine was different. The shape of mine was different. The movement was different. I wanted this to be its own thing.”
Atlas follows the story of a woman who finds herself stranded on a distant planet, forced to navigate the harsh terrain and hostile creatures in order to survive. With Jennifer Lopez in the lead role, the movie promises to deliver a thrilling and unique sci-fi experience.
As Peyton states, “Science-fiction is hallowed ground. And because of that, I don't want to retread what's been done well before.” With Atlas, he has certainly delivered on that promise.
What are your thoughts on the unique take on sci-fi in Atlas? Do you think it's a refreshing change from the typical sci-fi movies we see today?
