Lionsgate is Developing a Dirty Dancing Remake

Allan Ford September 9, 2011 5 comments
Dirty Dancing (1987) - Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey A remake of the 1987 hit “Dirty Dancing” is in the works. Production Weekly broke the news via their Twitter page. Uptown Girls writer Julia Dahl has been hired to pen the script for the new movie. The original “Dirty Dancing” starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. It was made for just $6 million but went on to earn a massive $213.95 million worldwide. It also became the first film ever to sell a million copies on video and won several Golden Globes. A stage version is still playing packing them in in the West End, so the remake could prove a potential cash cow for Lionsgate. The follow-up, “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights“, was made for $25m and only earned $27.7m worldwide. The lasting magic of Dirty Dancing was its exact depiction of life in the late fifties and early sixties. The story of the characters was less compelling than their meticulous portrayal of the way life was in the era in which the film was set. It was an exact picture of the culture at that time, and the actors, producers and directors ‘got it’ perfectly, exactly. It’s a work of art. Could we reproduce any existing work of art? Who knows? Someone may someday make an attempt to ‘remake’ Casablanca. Ha!

I say go for it. Why not? I think I remember seeing a Patrick(RIP) interview where he said he would not mind seeing a remake of Dirty Dancing.

I am a fan of the original but I have often wonder who would play Johnny, and Baby in the remake. I think Channing Tatum would make a good Johnny we know he can dance just look at the original step up.
